4/4/2023 0 Comments Printopia for iphone![]() ![]() Great stuff! You can download a free demo of the software here. This means you don’t need to think about opening an Application on your Mac for it to work, instead you just know you can print if your Mac is turned on. The application is hidden away on your Mac due to it being in the System Preference panel which I also really like. Run Printopia on your Mac, and any printer your Mac can see. Overall Printopia is one of the most useful Applications you can download currently and it works brilliantly well with your iPad and iPhone. You can print from your iOS device even if you don't have an AirPrint printer. I have used a huge variety of printers and they all print out what I have told them to identically, so it is consistent one of my original worries. Information is sent from your iPhone and iPad very quickly through the Mac and to the printer of choice. Once you’ve ticked a printer you can start printing web pages, emails, notes, iWork documents ect. The interface to set all this up is literally just ticking the boxes of the printers you want to be shared, very very easy to use. ![]() The Application installs itself on your Mac within the System Preference panel and allows you to select which printers connected to your Mac (also lets you use network printers) to be usable from an iOS device. So we can now only print from our iPhone’s, iPod touch’s and iPad’s to selected printers which have wireless (walk up technology) printing onboard. Apple had the original intention to include this ability but decided to strip it from the final release of iOS 4.2. For Windows users, there's FingerPrint, and you can always try printing from your iPad using Google Docs. You may or may not know that iOS 4.2 lacks the ability to print to a shared printer connected to your Mac. You could also try the AirPrint Activator, which asks only for a donation. Also, for your chosen printer, make sure to check the box for "Share this printer on the network" on the Print & Scan page.Īlthough $20 might be too much to spend for the occasional print from your iDevice, if you wield your iPad or iPhone as a business tool, then it might be worth it. On the next window, make sure Printer Sharing is checked. Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan and click the Sharing Preferences button. If you don't see you printer listed, make sure Printer Sharing is turned on. Lastly, by clicking on the + button below the printers pane in the Printopia window, you can add another virtual destination, such as a specific folder on your Mac or even Dropbox, or an application such as iPhoto. Instead of to the printer, you can send it as a PDF to your Mac. You can also use your Mac as a virtual printer. I was able to print from my iPad 2's Mail app, Photos app, Web pages in Safari, and iWork apps Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. What is Printopia for Mac Run Printopia on your Mac to share its printers to any capable iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. Unless you have a Mac Mini and always leave it running, one drawback is your Mac needs to be running and connected to your printer in order to print from and iDevice using Printopia. And that’s only half of what Printopia can do. As long as everything is connected to the same network, Printopia should find your printer automatically, whether a printer is connected via USB to your Mac or via a wired or wireless connection to your Wi-Fi router. Luckily, a small utility called Printopia makes it possible for your iOS device to print to any printer your Mac can see. (This means that if you take your laptop to different location outside your wireless network’s range, you won’t be able to print until the laptop is present again.) Printopia is free to try for 7 days. On the Printopia window, an on/off button sits on the left and a list of available printers sits on the right. One caveat is that the Mac must be present on the same network at the same time as the iPad or iPhone for Printopia to work. You'll find it listed at the bottom of the System Preferences window under Other. Printopia doesn't open as an application but instead opens as a pane in your Mac's System Preferences. You'll need to be running Mac OS X 10.5 or later (there is no PC version of the app) and iOS 4.2 or later. To download the free trial, head to Ecamm Network's Web site. It's easy to set up, and although Printopia costs $19.95, there is a free seven-day trial you can use to make sure it works with your setup. With my MacBook Pro running the Printopia app and my printer connected to it, my iPad and iPhone are able to see my printer. ![]()
